In the preceding texts, we have witnessed the struggle of life against the elements, and while the elements offer plenty of obstacles to overcome in order to win the great secret, the Egyptian story locates the true test of the hero in death itself. To die and be reborn, that is what is required of him. Otherwise nothing can move forward. Separated from his brother by dangerous, crocodile-filled waters, Bata cannot be reunited with him until after he has sojourned in the Valley of Umbrella Pines and been brought back to life. And even then, because of his wife’s infidelity, he must submit to a series of transformations, taking the form of animal, then vegetable, before his legitimate rights triumph and he attains supreme power.

Maspero, who circulated this story in France before Gustave Lefebvre, notes that Bata, or Bytis, is one of the popular names of Osiris. With this god, we encounter one of the most ancient forms of the redemptive resurrection myth.

The Osiris legend opposes the human hope of discovering that truth hidden by the mystery of the elements to the need for individual transformation. The body must be destroyed in order to be reborn in a new form.
